What I Learned Connecting React to Supabase

Lessons from building React interfaces backed by Supabase authentication, PostgreSQL data, storage uploads, row-level security, and serverless functions.

Supabase makes the backend accessible, not automatic

Supabase provides an excellent foundation, but a reliable application still requires deliberate data modeling, clear service functions, error handling, and security policies.

Keep database calls in service modules

Centralizing reads, writes, uploads, and updates keeps React components focused on the interface. It also gives the application one place to normalize errors and change query behavior later.

Row-level security changes how you think

Security policies should be planned alongside the feature. A query can be perfectly written in React and still fail because the signed-in user does not have the correct policy. Treating security as part of feature design prevents last-minute surprises.

Storage and database records must stay synchronized

Serverless functions protect credentials

API secrets should not live in frontend JavaScript. Supabase Edge Functions provide a practical server-side boundary for third-party integrations, authentication tokens, and normalized API responses.
